TRADERS says 120 fewer people at the passport office is 120 fewer people using shops in an already troubled city centre.

Although traders are happy that a same day passport service will remain in Newport, they say they cannot afford to lose any more potential trade in the city.

On Monday immigration minister Damian Green announced that while customer services will stay at the Newport Passport Office, only 150 of the original 300 jobs will remain.

Businesses say trade is already hard without the further planned 120 job losses at the office, with firms such as Burton’s and Marks and Spencer planning to make an exit.

Mike Turner, of AD Turner and Sons market butchers said the businesses do not want to lose anyone in the city centre.

“We have so many things against us,” he said. “We need as many people here as possible.

”A lot of passport office staff come into the market.

We’ve been serving them for many years.”

Steve Reynolds, of Toy Army games store in the market, said: “It’s 120 people that would have a cup of coffee. It’s the only reason why the shops here are surviving.

“If people have got to come to Newport they will shop here but if they haven’t they will go to Spytty.

“But the saving grace is that they are keeping the same day service,” he added.

Nick Rabaiotti, manager of the Potters pub on Upper Dock Street, said: “We need all the help we can get in the city centre – we need all the footfall we can get.

“We get a few staff that come in here for lunch.

"Losing more than 100 people there would be something we’ll notice.”

Market trader Mark Ashman of Mr Fruit fruit and veg grocers said: “A lot of office staff come here. They might want a snack or fruit and veg. They’re often here at dinner times getting a quick lunch.

“It’s good to have people working in the city.”
