A NEW Inn post master will cycle 1,250 miles to Spain to raise money for a cystic fibrosis unit in honour of his sister-in law who suffers with the disease.
Malcolm Durrant, 59, will be cycling an average of 85 miles a day for two weeks to complete the challenge setting off from 14 Locks Canal Centre in Rogerstone today and ending at his holiday home in Albatera, Alicante.
The grandfather-of-two, who will compete the cycle unaided and carrying his own bags, will travel through England before getting the ferry from Portsmouth to France. He will then cycle down to Bordeaux and through Toulouse before entering Spain, passing through Barcelona and Valencia before reaching his destination.
Mr Durrant, hopes to raise £1,500, which will be donated to the cystic fibrosis unit at Cardiff’s Llandough Hospital.
He decided to take on the challenge because his sister-in law Susan Jones, 44, suffers with the disease which affects the internal organs clogging the lungs and digestive system with mucus.
Mrs Jones is currently awaiting a lung transplant and receives much of her treatment at the hospital.
The sponsored cycle is also in memory of Mr Durrant’s brother-in-law Malcolm Watkins, who died from the disease aged just 15.
Anyone wishing to sponsor him can send a cheque in his name to Panteg Post Office, 110 The Highway, New Inn, NP4 0PJ.
