A multi-million primary school, the cornerstone project of Blaenau Gwent council's radical shake-up of education, is up for debate next week.
Plans for the new 420-place primary on The Works site, Ebbw Vale, is the hot topic of discussion for council planners on Thursday.
The school is the latest development in the £350 million regeneration of the former Ebbw Vale steelworks site, which is now in its sixth year.
Flagship projects like the Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan, an environmental resource centre and low energy homes are already completed, with work due to start on the £15million sports centre this summer.
But its the school which has sparked the most attention as it will replace the former Pontygof and Waunlwyd primary schools and Pen y Cwm Special School.
This is the first phase of Blaenau Gwent council's plan to transform education in the borough. The new two-storey primary is part of a £44million scheme, funded by a Welsh Assembly transitional grant, to provide a new primary and secondary school The primary school will include sports pitch, play ground, a minibus drop off point and cycle shelter.
A wildflower meadow is also proposed to the north of the school and the roof of the building would be finished in a sedum blanket which is a mix of low growing plants.
If approved, the children will move into the school in September 2012.
Plans for the secondary school, which will replace Ebbw Vale and Glyncoed Comprehensives, have not yet been released.
Also up for debate next week are plans for a 500-space multi-storey car park at the site and an Energy Centre, which will help power The Works site and double up as a classroom and exhibition area for public use.
