A COALITION of trade union groups in Newport says it will continue to fight to save passport office jobs.

Newport Trades Union Council said it had "cautiously welcomed" the news 150 jobs will be retained at the passport office but expressed dismay that 120 jobs will be lost.

Malcolm Degroot, council secretary, said the news was still a "devastating blow" for the local economy and will pit "worker against worker."

He said the NTUC would back the campaign to retain all staff at the office, which will be the subject of a meeting at the Kings Hotel in Newport tomorrow at 6.30pm.
