NEWPORT boxer Sean McGoldrick will see his Commonwealth Games silver medal turn to gold, the Argus can reveal.
Mr McGoldrick brought a silver medal home from last year’s games in Delhi after being narrowly beaten in the bantamweight 56kg division final by Manju Wanniarachchi.
But the Sri Lankan fighter had his medal stripped from him by the Commonwealth Games Federation after failing an anti-doping test in May, and has since told reporters he will not appeal.
His decision paves the way for the federation to give Mr McGoldrick the gold, and a source has informed the Argus he may be awarded the medal as soon as next week.
During the games the Welsh boxer – who was a Duffryn High School pupil at the time – led for much of the October 13 final against Mr Wanniarachchi but it ended 7-7, with the Sri Lankan winning on count-back.
The decision was controversial with some observers claiming several shots by the Newport lad went unrewarded.
But it soon emerged Mr Wanniarachchi had failed a doping test taken during the games, testing positive for 19-Norandrosterone.
Despite protesting his innocence he was disqualified last month by a hearing of the federation court in Malaysia, which ruled his medal be forfeited and returned.
Mr Wanniarachchi had the right to make a further appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland, but he has now retired and said “in the interest of boxing and the love of the sport” he would not proceed with the appeal.
