A BABY girl was in a critical condition in hospital last night after falling almost 15 feet from a window.
The one-year-old was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital suffering from serious head injuries, before being transferred to the paedatric intensive care unit at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, after plummeting from the first floor window of a flat in Potter Street, Pill, Newport.
Emergency services were called to the narrow terraced street at around 5.10pm on Wednesday evening, after reports a child had fallen from a window.
A Gwent Police spokeswoman said the baby was in a "serious but stable condition" and officers were satisfied that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
Many residents said they were unaware of what had happened until police carried out door-to-door enquiries later that evening.
One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "I heard a child scream, but we didn't think anything of it until the police came to ask if we'd seen anything.
They haven't lived there long. Only about two weeks."
An ambulance service spokesman confirmed an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle attended the scene and took the child to the hospital, but could not give any details on her injuries.
A Newport Council spokeswoman said the social services department were aware of the situation.
She said: "We are offering support and the parents know they can contact us. This appears to be an unfortunate accident.”
