A CWMBRAN man is helping to ensure the United Nations operations over Libya go without a hitch.
Flight Lieutenant Iestyn Morgan, 29, is an operations officer with 11 Squadron usually based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, but at the moment he is in Italy, working with the UN.
The former Fairwater Comprehensive pupil is responsible for mission support to the Typhoon aircraft carrying out operations over Libya, which involves flight planning for every mission and ensuring all preparation is in place for the departure and return of aircraft.
RAF Tornado and Typhoon aircraft are currently based at Gioia Del Colle in Italy playing a central role in the UK’s contribution to enforcing UN Security Council Resolution 1973, which aims to protect Libyan civilians from the Gaddafi regime.
Flt Lt Morgan, who joined the RAF in June 2007, said: “We get tasked from the Combined Air Operating Centre. It is up to us to plan the mission in order to fulfil their objective. I feel proud to be part of the support network which enables the Typhoon to work towards fulfilling the UN 1973 mandate.”
