ARMED police swarmed around Newport’s university yesterday after reports an 18-yea-old woman was threatened by a man.
Students at the Caerleon Campus of the University of Wales, Newport, found officers armed with guns and tasers patrolling the area off Lodge Road at around 10.20am.
A police dog and handler were also on site while the Gwent Police helicopter patrolled the skies in a bid to track down the 25-year-old man.
People living on the site said security guards were called to the Grosmont halls of residence at around 8am.
They said they understood the 18-year-old woman, who is believed to be a student, had argued with the man, who is understood to be her boyfriend.
Aspokeswoman for Gwent Police said they were called to the campus at 10.10am after reports a man made threats to a woman and had a knife, but they had not been able to confirm if he was armed.
She said officers stood down at around 2.30pm when they were confident he was no longer in the vicinity before carrying out all relevant address checks.
Their search took them to Fairoak Terrace, Maindee, where armed officers cordoned off the road on the junction with Duckpool Road, while they searched a house. Investigations were still ongoing last night as the Argus went to press.
A spokeswoman from the University of Wales, Newport, confirmed there was a police incident at its Caerleon Campus but said she could not comment further as it was still ongoing.
