A NEWPORT Oxfam shop is helping to launch the charity’s first emergency stock appeal following a fire at its sorting and recycling facility in Huddersfield.
The shop in Corn Street is issuing an emergency appeal for stock donations following the biggest loss of donations in the charity’s 69-year-history in the fire at the West Yorkshire Wastesaver facility in April.
The fire destroyed hundreds of pounds worth of specialised machinery and donated stock.
Shop manager, Gary Farr said: “This is the biggest single loss of donations Oxfam has ever suffered, so we really need everyone in Newport to dig through their cupboards and wardrobes for any unwanted clothes or accessories they might be able to spare to help us.
The fire also wiped out the clothing stock held for Oxfam’s popular festivals shop, which last year raised £250,000.
To replace the festivals stock, the Oxfam shops need winter clothing such as coats, tweeds, fake furs; vintage items such as dresses, scarves and accessories; fancy dress and wellies and waterproofs.
Knitted blankets and home-made bunting are also needed.
