A MAN wanted by armed police following an incident at the University of Wales, Newport’s Caerleon campus gave himself up, the force confirmed yesterday.
The 25-year-old man called officers and arranged to meet them at the campus off Lodge Road around 6.30pm, where he was arrested and later cautioned for common assault.
Officers armed with guns and Tasers were called to the site at around 10.20am on Monday after receiving reports that an 18-year-old woman had been threatened by a man.
A police dog and handler patrolled the site and the Gwent Police helicopter was scrambled in a bid to find the man, who was believed to have been armed with a knife.
Students living in nearby halls of residence said they believed the 18-year-old woman had argued with the man, who they understood to be her boyfriend.
Officers remained at the campus until 2.30pm on Monday before their search took them to Fairoak Terrace, Maindee, where armed officers cordoned off the road at the junction with Duckpool Road, while they searched a house.
On Monday a spokeswoman for the university confirmed an incident took place but said they could not comment further due to the police investigation.
