A Newport man's Tardis shed beat 1,570 other entrants and was shortlisted for a national award.

John Williams' creation has made the top nine of the Cuprinol-backed National Shed of the Year awards, with the winner set to be announced next month.

Mr Williams, 43, of Fields Road, is a lifelong sci-fi fan, whose plywood creation cost £700 and took eight months to build.

The design engineer said: "We had a wendy house in our garden, but when our three kids we're too old for it, we dismantled it. The space left was the right shape for a Tardis. It was either that or a Dalek, and my wife, Fiona, hates Daleks, so she reluctantly agreed. It was probably the better option as we can use it to store garden furniture."

Mr Williams was featured in the Argus two months ago after completing the 1.4 metres squared and 2.6 metres tall shed and was urged to enter the competition by readers.

On being short-listed, he said: "I built it as a tribute to a programme that has inspired me since I was seven and to add an element of quirkiness to my garden. I'm keeping my fingers crossed."

The winner will be given £1,000 and a range of Cuprinol products.
