SHANNON White turned her favourite hobby into money for a worthy cause – raising £720 for Velindre Hospital through a sponsored bounce on her trampoline.
The 11-year-old Blackwood Primary School pupil will hand over a cheque to the cancer centre later this week after completing the challenge in memory of her nan, Olive Elliott.
Shannon was devastated when Mrs Elliott died aged 73.
She had fought cancer for five years after lung cancer spread, with her grand-daughter providing a great comfort.
Shannon’s mother, Carol White said: “They were very close and during three years of treatment, they were like soulmates.
Shannon stuck with her, going for treatment at Velindre and really kept her going.”
Mrs White praised the “amazing” care by Velindre staff, saying that Shannon decided “out of the blue” she wanted to do something to raise funds.
As she was always on her trampoline, sister-in-law Kerry suggested she do a sponsored bounce so Shannon attempted a three-hour stint.
Colleagues of her parents sponsored her as well as siblings Christopher, 25, Claire, 22 and other family and friends.
Around 60 people gathered in the family’s garden at Parc Plas, Blackwood, to cheer the event.
Mrs White added: “It was quite an emotional day, but very special.”
