A FIRE tore through a Newport home in the earlier hours of yesterday morning.
People living next door to the house on Chepstow Road, Maindee, raised the alarm when they noticed smoke billowing into an upstairs rooms from the ceiling.
The family-of-six escaped without harm and woke other neighbours before raising the alarm around 5.15am.
No-one was hurt and the owner of the house where the fire started made his own way out.
One man said: “Smoke started coming in and my wife started screaming.
“I saw the smoke and my first thought was to get everybody out. I just wanted to make sure everyone was ok.”
The neighbours, who did not want to be named, said the blaze, which is believed to have started on the first floor, caused smoke and fire damage in the upstairs bedrooms after it spread into the house through the loft.
It is not yet known how much it will cost to repair.
Fire crews from Malpas, Maindee, Duffryn and Cwmbran attended the fire and remained at the house dampening down yesterday afternoon.
Police cordoned off ChepstowRoad eastbound, near the junction with Wharf Road, while firefighters tackled the blaze but it was reopened around 9.40am.
Fire investigators are expected to start looking into the cause of the today.
Gwent Police are currently not investigating.
