TWO MULTIPLE sclerosis sufferers are preparing to zip slide 242ft off Newport’s Transporter Bridge to raise money for the MS Society.
Jackie Emms, 51, from Undy, uses a wheelchair most of the time, but she is determined to haul herself up the steps of the bridge to take part in the zip slide with her son Edward, 25, who is coming up from Plymouth to join in.
Mrs Emms and her brother, Stephen Pritchard, 53, were both diagnosed with the disease in the early 1980s.
Mrs Emms said: “I’ll love it. I used to climb trees when we were younger and I used to be the one at the top of the tree, with the scars to prove it.”
Monica Kingston, 40, said she has wanted to do something to help the charity for a while, but is unable to complete sponsored walks and many other events due to her condition.
The mother of two, from Rogerstone, signed up to the event as a personal challenge.
She said: “I can walk, but not very far. My legs are like jelly. Things like sponsored walks are out of the question for me, but this way I could do something for the MS Society.”
Mrs Kingston attends a MS sufferers’ group in Shaftesbury every Friday morning and said although the condition is very common not a lot of people talk about it, so she wanted to do something to raise awareness.
The event takes place on July 10. To sponsor Mrs Emms or Mrs Kingston visit www.
