AROUND 300 people marched through the streets of Newport yesterday in a civic parade to celebrate the appointment of Cllr Margaret Cornelious as the new mayor.

Groups including Newport and Caerleon branches of the Air Training Cadets, Newport Sea Cadets, the crew of HMS Severn, the Royal Artillery volunteers and cubs, scouts and beavers from across the city paraded to the civic centre.

They were accompanied, by bands of the Boys Brigade, First Rogerstone Scouts, Newport Pipes and Drums and the city’s Stedfast Band as they marched down Stow Hill, Bridge Street, Faulkner Road and formed outside the Crown Court.

The parade followed a special civic service at Newport Cathedral, where Graig councillor Mrs Cornelious was welcomed into the role, along with the consort, her husband, Ken.

Around 500 people attended the service, which also marked Armed Forces Day and the 30th anniversary of the city’s twinning with Heidenheim.

Along with a delegation from the German city, the crew of Newport’s adopted naval ship HMS Severn were also present.

HMS Severn is docked at Newport until Wednesday on its annual visit.

Acting Dean of Monmouth, the Rev Canon Dr Keith Denison welcomed Cllr Cornelious into her new role, while council leader Cllr Matthew Evans and managing director Tracy Lee gave readings.

Cllr Cornelious said she is “honoured and proud” to take on the new role, saying she is looking forward to serving the people of the city.

After the parade converged outside the Crown Court for the playing of the national anthems of Wales and the UK, the new mayor hosted a dinner for HMS Severn crew and guests from Heidenheim.
