SPRING lambs, daffodils and fallen blossom were among this year’s winning entries in our Picture Power competition.

The beauty of spring was creatively captured in photographs sent in to the South Wales Argus for our contest, run in conjunction with Western Power Distribution, to find the most talented young photographers in Gwent.

Seven-year-old Rico Scarpato took the winning title in the five-to-ten-yearold category with his picture of his four-year-old sister Alexa laying in the falling blossom at Belle Vue Park.

The St Michael’s Roman Catholic Primary School pupil captured the moment while enjoying a family trip to the park back in March.

The youngster said he was pleased to have won and enjoyed taking pictures.

He said: “I took the picture on my mum’s phone.”

Taking second place in the category was Izzy Wilde, eight, of Griffithstown, with her bright picture of a field of yellow daffodils.

The Griffithstown Primary School pupil got the shot at Clytha Park after noticing the flowers while riding in her dad’s car.

Izzy, who has owned a camera since she was around four years old, enjoys photography and regularly likes to take pictures.

She said: “I enjoy taking pictures of most things but especially things to do with spring.” It was an image of daffodils which also claimed third place in the younger age category for Millie Holborn, eight, of Sycamore Road, Blaenavon. Her picture was taken outside Varteg Cemetery.

Her mum, Stacey Holborn, who is also into photography, said the Victoria Primary School pupil often uses her camera to take pictures.

She said: “She really liked the daffodils and decided to take a picture of them. She likes to take photos with me.”

In the category for 11 to 15- year-olds, it was Annabel Johnson, of Newbridge, who was named the winner with a close-up shot of flowers from her great grandmother Celia’s garden.

The 12-year-old took three pictures in total entitled ‘Spring begins to blossom’.

The Newbridge Comprehensive School pupil said: “I am very excited to win and am over the moon. I just happen to see stuff and take pictures of it. I really like taking photographs.”

In second place was Tiegan Neary, 12, of Cwmbran.

Tiegan, a pupil at Llantarnam Comprehensive, captured some spring lambs near Abergavenny and gave her photo the title ‘B-ewe-ty Parade’. She said: “I went to take the picture and a lot of them ran away but then a few lambs stayed looking at me so I decided to take that picture.

“I am really happy to have got second place in the competition.”

Third place went to Emily- Beth Richards, now 16, of Blackwood, who captured the colourful flowers in her back garden.

The Blackwood Comprehensive student said: “I am really chuffed to get third place. I just saw the flowers in the back garden and thought it would be a nice picture to take. I have been into photography for a few years now.” The competition was open to all children aged five to 15 with many budding young photographers sending their creative entries in.

The winner of each age group will now receive £150 of vouchers to spend on cameras and camera accessories as well as £500 of media equipment for their school.

The runners up in each category win £50 of vouchers to spend on a camera and camera accessories.
