LOCAL dignitaries and members of the Royal British Legion will be among those attending a church service in Tredegar at the weekend to remember those lost in battle in Burma.
Eleven members of the 6th Battalion South Wales Borderers lost their lives on March 26, 1944, when the regiment took control of The Mayu Tunnels which were being used as an ammunition dump by the Japanese.
It was renamed The Battle of Tredegar Hill as a reminder of the victory and loss.
Two years later Captain Moore, of Tredegar, brought a casket of soil home from the battlefield and a shrine was built and dedicated to the war dead at Bedwellty House.
On Sunday the casket will be returned to the Burma Shrine at the house, after it was moved to the St James’ Church, while the house was being renovated.
A service will be held at St James’ Church at 2.15pm , followed by a service of rededication at Bedwellty House at 3pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
