TWO Newport men were yesterday jailed for three years each for robbing a pizza delivery driver of his money in an early morning attack.
Jamie Kent and Damien May robbed Amanj Ahmed, a driver for Newport Grill, at 1am in November 2009.
Kent, 28, of Llewellyn Street, then went on to burgle a building at the Ministry of Defence training base in Caerwent, with Philip Wainfur, 26, of Palm Square, also of Newport, while he was on bail for the robbery.
All three men were sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court yesterday. May, 23, of Glebe Street, and Kent were found guilty of robbery during a trial last month, where May was also found guilty of criminal damage which Kent had already admitted. He and Wainfur had also pleaded guilty to burglary.
The trial heard Mr Ahmed had finished a delivery in Sycamore Avenue, Newport, when he was approached by the defendants and a third, unnamed man.
Mr Ahmed was grabbed and punched and his jacket, containing £200, was pulled off him as he tried to flee. The trial heard that the men damaged his car – one of them smashing the windscreen.
Police were flagged down by the victim and officers arrested Kent and May later.
Kent, while out on bail for the robbery, then took part in the burglary with Wainfur on February 3, 2011.
In mitigation for Kent barrister Simon Goodman said he was taking medicine for mental illness. Speaking for May, Steve Thomas said the defendant had a “very difficult up-bringing”, while Wainfur’s barrister said his defendant had no history of convictions for dishonesty.
Judge Christopher Llewellyn-Jones QC sentenced Kent to 40 months in prison for robbery, burglary and criminal damage, while May was given 36 months in prison for robbery and criminal damage. Wainfur was given a suspended sentence for 18 months with 180 hours’ unpaid work.
