PART of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal which runs through Torfaen could become a designated conservation area under new proposals.
The proposal, by Torfaen council, would affect the area of canal which runs through the wards of New Inn, Pontypool, Panteg, Pontnewydd, St Dials, Two Locks and Llantarnam.
A study into the historic character of the canal and its environment in Torfaen was carried out in November 2008 which found several key characteristics which make the canal of special interest.
This includes its significance as part of the canal network and its contribution to the industrial transformation of the area.
It also refers to its current use as a popular area for pleasure boats, walkers, cyclists and anglers and the architectural interest of its aqueducts, milestones and 23 nearby Grade II listed buildings.
A consultation period was carried out between February and March last year, with letters sent out to around 800 nearby property owners.
The council received 27 written comments in support of the proposal and three against.
A report by council officers, which will be discussed by full council on Tuesday, suggests that this support for the proposal outweighs the objections.
It also explains how the designation of the area is part of a longterm strategy by Torfaen for the regeneration and protection of the canal.
This includes developing areas such Cwmbran town centre canalside, south Sebastopol, Ty Coch, Mamhilad and, in the longer term, the County Hospital site in Panteg as part of the Local Development Plan.
