AFTER months of preparation and hours spent slaving over hot stoves, women from all over Gwent joined forces at the weekend to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Gwent Federation of the Women’s Institute.
The federation has 53 branches and around 1,500 members. Since it was formed at The Angel Hotel in Abergavenny in February 1921 it has welcomed members of all ages.
The anniversary picnic at Chepstow Racecourse on Saturday was the latest event to mark its birthday, and despite the damp conditions, members still turned out in force.
Members sold homemade cakes and plants and held raffles, as well as selling other handmade goods and enjoying a good get-together over a cuppa.
Federation treasurer Penelope Blood said: “It was a fantastic day, despite the weather. We felt it was important to mark such and we were glad that so many members supported us.”
