A MAN nicknamed ‘the smooth criminal’ who stole thousands of pounds from a family in Mountain Ash by posing as a police officer may have come from Gwent, police said yesterday.

The man knocked on a door in Albany Street, Mountain Ash, on June 20, claiming to be an officer who needed to search the house.

The family allowed the man to tie their hands up with plastic ties as he convinced them it was police procedure.

He stole thousands of pounds in cash and silver ingots, wearing blue plastic gloves as he searched the house.

A group of men left in a dark coloured BMW after 15 minutes.

No one was hurt.

DCI Huw Lewis said: “There is a strong possibility this male and his accomplices came over from Gwent. We have described the man who did most of the talking as the ‘smooth criminal.’”

‘Smooth criminal’ is described as white, in his early 40s, 6ft tall, of medium build and good looking with short, black hair which was receding at the front.

He was clean shaven, with brown eyes and black eyebrows.

He was wearing a dark, waist-length tailored coat, a very light blue shirt and a dark tie with very thin stripes, dark trousers, dark shoes and a gold-looking watch.
