THIS IS pupil Cornelius Madler gearing up for his fourth walk to school – all to help other children who are not as fortunate as himself.
The six-year-old from Devauden put his little legs forward for daily trips to Shirenewton Primary, a feat which has already raised around £220 for Save the Children’s Africa Appeal.
His journey began soon after seeing pictures of starving children in the news, as African countries are gripped by famine.
So last Thursday, accompanied by big sister Freddie and older brother Ben, he began the walk of three and threequarter miles from his home in Devauden to school.
But a morning marathon of one-and-ahalf hours was not enough for the youngster, he insisted to mum Frauke he must walk back as well, for five days, if children in Africa struggle to find shoes.
Mrs Madler, 45, said: “He saw it in the papers and was obsessed, saying he must do something to help. We thought one way would be enough of a challenge but he got upset when I suggested that and said he meant walking there and back.”
Mrs Madler set a £60 fundraising target but villagers soon rallied round, taking the total to more than £200. A small reception was planned for yesterday to congratulate him on his efforts.
