LOCAL people will be able to see plans for two wind turbines on land at Oakdale Business Park at a public exhibition next week.

The 25-year scheme by Renewable energy developer Partnerships for Renewables, could power nearly 2,400 homes.

After consulting local people, the developer has now submitted a full planning application to place the 130metre-high turbines on site-access tracks to Lon Gellideg and Manmoel Road further east than originally planned, making them further away from the nearest residents.

Investigations have found that the site, on land owned by Caerphilly council, is suitable for wind energy development following environmental and technical studies.

It would generate 11 gigawatt hours of green electricity a year and electricity from the turbines may also be fed directly to companies based at the business park as well as providing discounted energy for homes in the local area.

Caerphilly council officials have been working with the developer to look into the potential of wind energy in the area since 2009 and the scheme forms part of the council’s ambitious sustainable regeneration strategy. All development costs of the project would be met by Partnerships for Renewables, which is a Carbon Trust enterprise.

Caerphilly council would receive a percentage of the profits derived from the electricity generated by the wind turbines.

The exhibition will be held on Friday 5 August at Oakdale Community Centre, Penrhiw Avenue, Oakdale between 3pm and 6.30pm.
