GWENT council leaders have spoken out in support of our Buy Local campaign.
The campaign, launched on July 4, aims to encourage people to use their local independent shops and help keep them alive.
Hundreds of people have already shown their support by displaying the Argus Buy Local posters in their windows and writing in to highlight their favourite stores.
During our launch, Newport council leader Matthew Evans said: "We have fine shops both in the city centre and in our neighbourhoods.
“A survey of independent shops in the city centre last year named them as the best in the UK.
“Our historic indoor market is packed with local traders and shoppers can find a wide range of goods under one roof, including excellent food and produce.
“My message to everyone is not to take their local shops for granted, they need our regular custom.
"We often don’t realise how important they are until it is too late.”
Blaenau Gwent council leaer Des Hillman said: “I am proud to support the Argus's campaign 'Buy Local' We should all buy locally as much as possible to support our local retailers and shops and keep town centres thriving,” said the Leader.
“We have fantastic five star towns in Blaenau Gwent, which have a huge amount to offer local people and visitors,” he added.
“Blaenau Gwent’s towns are accessible and distinctive – full of friendly people. Our five town centres of Abertillery, Blaina, Brynmawr, Ebbw Vale and Tredegar have a lot to offer.
"We’re really keen to get as many people as possible taking advantage of what’s on offer in their local shopping centre.
"It is part of our work to make town centres even more vibrant and viable. If everyone were to back this campaign, it would be a huge boost and vote of confidence for local retailers – who are often the lifeblood of any town.
“We plan to promote Blaenau Gwent’s 5 star towns as star locations to spend time, with star attractions, and shining investment opportunities. We urge Argus readers to come, soak up the atmosphere, and enjoy what our local shops have to offer.”
Bob Wellington, leader of Torfaen council added: "“We’re spoilt for choice in Torfaen with a vast array of diverse and great value shops across the length of the borough.
“Local shops need the support of local people to survive, especially in the difficult economic conditions businesses are currently operating within.
“Coupled with strong competition from out-of-town stores, multi-national shops supermarkets and the internet, as well as an increase in key spend areas including mortgage rates and energy costs, there has never been such an important time to support local traders.
“We are proud to have such a wide selection of independent local traders in Torfaen and this helps the area retain its distinctive feel and appearance.
“I urge all residents to continue to support their local shops and see for themselves the wonderful diversity of shops and goods available to shoppers in Torfaen.”
Allan Pritchard, Caerphilly council leader said, "It is important that we support our local traders - especially during these tough economic times.
"Our town centres offer something for everyone, from major national stores to smaller independent retailers and they also boast a unique character and history that we should all be proud of.
"Our towns offer a fantastic shopping experience, but we musn't forget our local shops and corner stores that are often the lifeblood of many small village community. We fully support this campaign to boost our local businesses."
