THOUSANDS of people flocked to a charity football tournament and funday held in honour of a Risca man who died of a heart condition on his 22nd birthday.
Mark Powell, dad of Craig Powell who died in May 2008, said around 2,000 people came to the six-a-side tournament and funday at Ty Isaf Park, Risca, on Sunday.
He said the family have been pledged £8,000 for the event, which once handed in will be donated to the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity.
It is the second year the family have organised the six-a-side tournament, which saw around 40 football teams taking part.
"We were impressed by the turn out – more people came this year," said Mark Powell. "It was a very good day."
Craig Powell died while working in Swindon as an asbestos contractor, unaware he had the heart condition myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle caused by a minor infection Other activities billed included a wresting show, climbing wall, rodeo bulls, petting animals and an inflatable assault course, while local bands also played at the charity day.
