9.30am POLICE - including armed officers - have surrounded a house in Aust Crescent where a man is threatening to harm himself, a spokeswoman said today.

Officers were called to the house at around 6.30am and police are currently at the scene.

Local people have told the Argus some residents in the street have been told to stay inside their homes.

12.30pm Police say man's mother called 999 after he barricaded himself in his bedroom in the early hours today.

12.48pm Around 30 residents, including children, have gathered at a police cordon to watch the drama unfold.

12.54pm Inspector Paul Jackson says the police aim is for "him to walk out of the door nice and peacefully". He said the man does not pose a threat to the public or officers at this time.

1pm Police say the man is in his early thirties.

1.02pm Man's mother said to be talking to police officers and negotiators outside the house. Concerned family members are waiting for news at the police cordon.

1.36pm Man seen at the bedroom window of the house waving to people at the cordon and brandishing a small trophy.

2.10pm Police use a battering ram to enter the house on Aust Crescent - around seven officers go inside.

2.25pm Police lead out man, seen shouting on the front lawn, and place him in the back of a van.
