PLANS to demolish one of Newport’s university campuses to make way for homes were submitted to the city council.
Asbri Planning lodged proposals on behalf of housing developer Taylor Wimpey for the demolition of the University of Wales, Newport's Allt-Yr-Yn Campus buildings and reinstatement of the land.
A letter to the council says the proposed work is likely to have a significant affect on the environment so the developer has put together an environmental statement detailing how it will deal with bats living at the site and the presence of asbestos in the building, which could potentially cause a risk to human health and the environment if it is not dealt with properly.
The 13.5 acre site already has outline planning permission for up to 200 homes and was bought by Taylor Wimpey for £10.5 million in May this year.
Money from its sale will go towards the University of Wales, Newport’s £50 million expansion to its city centre campus.
Taylor Wimpey plans to build around 130 high quality three, four and five bedroom detached houses on the site.
Its existing woodland is expected to be retained and homes are likely to be built on the existing slopes of the site offering excellent views over Newport.
If planning permission is granted demolition work on the 1960s buildings will start this summer with construction expected to start in the autumn.
