AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD with an appetite for climbing who reached the top of Mount Snowdon raised around £160 for charity.

Griffithstown Primary School pupil George Murphy persuaded dad Mark, 41, to do the climb for St David's Foundation, a cause the family chose to support due to its local link.

It was the second fundraiser for the pair, who walked up Pen Y Fan last year, collecting £120 for the same charity.

Despite his young age, little George relished the climb which took place last month, tackling the 11 mile-plus route on the Llanberis path with gusto.

Dad and son are regular climbers, a hobby which Mr Murphy took up following his retirement from the Army, where he served with the 1st Royal Tank Regiment.

Mr Murphy who lives with wife Kathryn, 36, George and Henry, two, in Sebastopol, said the trip to the top took around six-and-a-half hours, and people were glowing about George's achievement.

"Everybody going up and down was saying how well he had done," Mr Murphy said.

He added 'eager' George wants to climb Ben Nevis, but they will first plan an assault on the Three Peaks Challenge.

BLOB St David's Foundation is looking for people to take part in their Snowdon Challenge on September 24. For more information call Sally Anne-Rees on 01633 271364.
