BLACKWOOD Library is set to get a £215,000 facelift with work due to start in the next few months.

It will see the facility turned into what Caerphilly council terms a "modern 21st century public space", with a new suspended ceiling, lighting scheme and carpets.

The library will also be completely redecorated, with new glazing, entrance and exit doors, a new shelving scheme, furniture, self-service kiosks introduced plus new toilets.

Blackwood Library was designated a portal facility in Caerphilly council's tiering model for public library development, which was approved in 2003. This means it is in the highest level of public library provision the local authority seeks to provide.

It serves 28,609 people in Blackwood, Cefn Fforest, Pontllanfraith, Ynysddu, Markham and parts of Crumlin and its catchment area is second only to Caerphilly town in the local authority area.

Work was earmarked to take place between 2009 and 2014, with the Welsh Government allocating a £94,000 grant towards the work.

Caerphilly council's cabinet this week approved a recommendation to release £50,000 of education and leisure directorate funds to allow the work to start as soon as possible.

An estimate suggests the final cost will be around £215,000, with refurbishments costing around £78,000, new windows and doors around £45,000, a self service kiosk and security £16,000 and toilets £26,000.
