A GWENT detective inspector says police are cracking down on child sexual exploitation following the sentencing of two men last week.

Detective Inspector Chris Adams said the predatory crime would “not be tolerated”

and that by working with the Crown Prosecution Service and local authorities, offenders will continue to be prosecuted.

The statement comes following the sentencings of two Newport men last week who were both jailed for child sexual exploitation crimes.

Basharat Javid, 23, of Corporation Road, was jailed for four years and three months on Friday after pleading guilty to paying for the sexual services of a child and sexual activity with a child.

This is after he contacted an under age teenage girl through a social networking site and met her in a hotel twice. On one of these occasions, he paid the girl £120 for sex, but was unable to have sex, so kissed and touched her instead.

Last week Rigobert Mudingay, 38, of Malpas Road, was also jailed for two years after pleading guilty to paying for the sexual services of a child.

This was after he offered a girl £250 for sex.

Detective Inspector Adams said he hoped the sentencings would give past and present victims of these types of crimes the confidence to report it.

He said: “Gwent police, the crown prosecution service and the five local authorities have working strategies in place to combat child sexual exploitation and will continue to work together to prosecute people who target vulnerable children and young people.

“The dangers of child sexual exploitation are something that all parents and carers should be aware of and I would urge anyone with concerns about the sexual exploitation of children to contact the police.”
