WILD garlic soup and foraging in woodlands of Abergavenny are on the menu at the second Wild Garlic Festival.

Former journalist and festival organiser Stephen Powell, who set up a community forest farm at Llwyn Ffranc Farm on the slopes of the Skirrid Mountain, held the first festival at the farm last year and attracted 50 visitors.

Mr Powell, who recently started selling wild garlic, home-made apple and sloe jelly and a small amount of shiitake mushrooms at Abergavenny Farmers’ Market, has enlisted the support of local chef Franco Taruschio, who made The Walnut Tree Inn famous, to run a cookery demonstration focusing on garlic during the two-day event next month, which is supported by the sustainable development fund of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The first day takes place at the farm and the second in Arcadia Wood at Pantygelli, near Abergavenny.

Among the special guests are TV wild food expert and forager Raoul Van der Brouke and herbalist, writer and lecturer Christopher Robbins.

“Visitors will have the chance to forage for wild garlic in the woodland at Llwyn Ffranc, and at both venues we will aim to provide wild food, expert speakers and a relaxing festival atmosphere,” said Mr Powell.

The festival takes place on April 14-15.
