A NEW schools library which loans books to schools and nurseries in Monmouthshire and Torfaen has opened in Pontypool.
The Schools Literacy and Resource Centre loans a range of multimedia resources to teachers, including books to support the Welsh Curriculum and reading for enjoyment, religious and historical artefacts, story sacks and audio-visual materials.
A professionally qualified adviser with a small team helps set up and develop school libraries for primary and secondary schools.
Teachers are also offered training in raising standards of literacy and handling information.
A drop-in facility, complete with WiFi, will also be opened to accommodate workers from both authorities.
The centre, at Torfaen Business Park, New Inn, was officially opened by Monmouthshire council leader Peter Fox, who was given a tour of the building and saw displays by the Welsh Books Council and children’s book and library furnishing suppliers.
