A FORMER stalwart councillor, a man who voiced a Sat Nav and a pub landlord are among those hoping for your votes in the Caerphilly council elections next month.

The Caerphilly county borough is the largest of the Gwent authorities, with a total of 73 council seats covering 30 council wards in both the Caerphilly town and former Islwyn area.

Among the candidates standing in the former Islwyn ward is 77-year-old Leon Gardiner, who is standing for Labour in the Argoed ward.

The former miner has been a member of the Labour party since the 1950s and served as a councillor for 38 years, firstly in Bedwellty district, then in Islwyn borough and finally on Caerphilly County Borough Council after it was formed.

In 2006 he was awarded a regional merit award for his service to the party, signed by the then prime minister, Tony Blair.

Blackwood publican Paul Taylor, who runs The Rock Country Inn and Restaurant in the town, will stand as an independent against Mr Gardiner.

He missed out to Labour’s Chris Evans at the 2010 parliamentary elections in Islwyn, alongside Terri- Anne Matthews, who is standing for the Conservatives in Newbridge.

Risca United chairman Robert Derraven, who in 2010 won a competition to be the voice of Wales for TomTom satellite navigation units, is vying for your votes in Risca East.

The former club singer has previously supported acts including Tony Christie, the Nolans and Bob Monkhouse.

Council leader Allan Pritchard, who took over the reins from Lindsay Whittle after he was elected as an Assembly Member last year, will stand again for Plaid Cymru in Penmaen, while former Pengam councillor Kevin Dawson hopes to be re-elected for Labour in his former ward.
