Conservatives
IN 2008, AFTER decades of Labour neglect and complacency, Newport’s first ever coalition was formed.
The past four years have been extremely challenging but, despite the worst economic conditions since the 1930’s, our achievements include: two hours free parking; buses back down the High Street; £21 million on roads and pavements; cut councillors’ allowances; first ever city / food festivals; historic deal with the National Trust over Tredegar House; new special grants for city centre businesses; abolition of councillors’ annual ‘jolly’, replaced with Civic Awards ceremony; abolition of the mayor’s Mansion House, replaced with the public Register Office.
We are experienced, highly motivated candidates who want to make Newport a great place to live, work and do business.
With Admiral moving into the Centre, the Welsh FA relocating their HQ, significant cash injection into our historic market and announcement that Debenhams will anchor the new £100m leisure/retail development we have started to turn the corner.
Please, let us complete what we’ve started. For a positive future think local and vote Welsh Conservative on May 3.
Labour
LABOUR – Standing up for Newport.
The Tories and Liberal Democrats have ruled Newport since the last council elections in 2008.
In that time they have spent millions on redundancies, slashed social services and privatised the school meals service.
Home care services for the elderly have been hit hard.
The Tories and Lib Dems have stood aside and allowed our city centre to fall into decline.
We believe that these are the wrong priorities.
You have the chance to change this by ending Tory/Lib Dem rule.
We pledge to create a Caring City, where home care for the elderly and vulnerable is prioritised; a Fairer City where key council decisions are monitored through a new Fairness Commission; a Learning and Working City taking every opportunity to create or retain jobs and providing our schools with adequate resources; a Greener, Healthier and Safer City where clean air and tackling fly-tipping, dog-fouling and graffiti is a priority.
Liberal Democrats
BEFORE the last council elections Newport residents identified the poor state of roads and pavements as one of their main concerns.
During the last four years, with Liberal Democrats in the administration, the city council has invested more than £20 million to improve roads and pavements after decades of neglect.
Remember the old days, potholes with repairs to the repairs?
Four years ago the developers for the John Frost Square area of the city were struggling and they went bust.
Now, in record time, a new developer has been chosen – this time with realistic plans and with Debenhams as the anchor store.
Work has started on improving and regenerating Newport. There is more to do – much more.
On May 3, earlier if you have a postal vote, your choice for Lib Dem councillors will mean renewed investment in Newport and a skilled and experienced team to lead the way.
