MONMOUTH’S free nine day music festival starts today and continues until Saturday, August 25.
The festival is in its 30th year, and music fans can look forward to a packed programme of genres in the next nine days. These including rock, pop and roots, to classical, plus fun for all the family in a spectacular Carnival Day on Sunday, August 19.
This year’s main stage acts at Blestium Street’s car park include psycho-ceilidh-rockers Neck, Martin Turner’s Wishbone Ash, the Jon Amor Blues Group, New Amen Corner, indie hotshots The Words, from Manchester, top tribute acts The Secret Police and Hell’s Bells and local favourites including Rusty Shackle, Between the Lines, The Good Times, The Ronaldos, The Bandits and The Mighty Pledge.
Festival Fringe acts include hotly-touted rising stars such as Sam Eden and some of the most respected roots and blues artists in the UK, including Sons of the Delta. The classical music programme includes a newvenue, Wyastone Leys Concert Hall, where the new Monmouth Festival Orchestra will perform, plus some other very special classical concerts, one featuring a newpiece of music commissioned for the festival from the composer of the world’s shortest opera, Peter Reynolds.
Although the festival is free, there is an opportunity this year for visitors to make donations to the festival for the first time via a Paypal button on the festival website.
Les Modget, festival chair, said: “We knowtimes are tough but we do hope people will give generously when they’re approached by a friendly person with a donations bucket. Without their donations, and the support of local businesses through advertising and food trade stalls, the festival simply wouldn’t survive.
This year, we really want to encourage people to think about the value for money they’re getting and to give accordingly so we can put on an even better festival next year.”
