Newport and South Africa legend Gary Teichmann was back at Rodney Parade recently at an Argus-sponsored dinner held in his honour on the eve of the Wales v South Africa clash.
The Zimbabwe-born number eight led the Black and Ambers to their 2001 Principality Cup final triumph over Neath and met up with members of that victorious side, including Wales internationals Shane Howarth, Ian Gough, Matthew J Watkins, Andy Marinos and Alix Popham.
Teichmann joined Newport in 1999 after serving as one of the most successful captains in Springboks history, leading them to a record 17 consecutive Test match wins which included clinching the 1998 Tri Nations series.
Organiser Matthew Jones, from The Events Room, said: “It was a fantastic evening which was very well supported and it was just great to see Gary back in Newport again with so many of his old friends.”
It was a good weekend for Teichmann who then saw South Africa win 24-15 in Cardiff, the back rower the Boks’ captain when Wales managed their only ever win over their formidable old foe, recorded in the first game played at the Millennium Stadium in 1999.
