SPTS Technologies, a Newport manufacturer of etch, deposition and thermal processing equipment for the semi-conductor industry has won a prestigious award in the EEF Future Manufacturing Awards 2013, in a ceremony held at the @Bristol science centre. The company will now go onto the national finals, which will be held in London in January 2014, where they will compete against other regional winners from across the UK.
The South West Investing in Skills Award, sponsored by JAM Recruitment was awarded to the Newport-based company for the way in which it invested in skills and knowledge through an apprentice programme to successfully address its skills gap. The award recognises a manufacturer that has done the most to build skills, develop employees and harness the talent of its people.
Sponsor John Morris, CEO, JAM Recruitment says: “As specialist recruiters in the manufacturing industry, JAM is no stranger to the apparent skills gap. We applaud all of the companies within this category who have demonstrated their commitment to the cause and are playing a vital role in the growth of the industry.”
Tony Knowles, VP Global HR says: “The skills required by our workforce are highly technical and specialised. Recruitment of new staff as the company grows is a key business challenge. It is important we invest in on-going learning and development of our workforce to stay ahead of the technology curve and developments in the market. This inspires innovation in our workforce and we are then able to anticipate and understand our changing customer requirements.”
Phil Brownsord, EEF Region Director for SW said: “SPTS Technologies is a true South West business success story that highlights the role the region plays in driving the UK economy forward. By taking bold steps and investing in its people, resources and technology, they have grown their business despite the challenging economic climate. Ambitious companies such as SPTS Technologies are an asset to the South West and are very worthy of their success.”
The annual awards are hosted by EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, and recognise excellence in enterprise, innovation, exports, environmental performance, skills development, health and safety and apprenticeships among UK manufacturers. The headline sponsor for the awards is Aldermore Bank. The national finals will take place on Thursday January 30, 2014 in London.
