A Newport-based timber firm is expanding into Cardiff with a new depot.

Mon Timber Supplies, which is based at Alexandra Dock, Newport, is run by managing director Chris Worthy, the son of the original founder Alan Worthy.

The business was set up in 1975 as a pallet and packing case manufacturer and it moved to its present site in the early 1990s.

Over the years the business has expanded to include a roof truss manufacturing facility supplying national housebuilders across Wales and beyond and a joinery shop, along with general timber supplies for trade and DIY including flooring, timber, fencing and decking.

Mr Worthy said: “The expansion into Cardiff has been on the agenda for the last couple of years but we had been unable to find suitable premises. The strength of the economy at the moment has been the catalyst and we have found the right premises at Hadfield Road in Cardiff.”

He said that during the economic downturn the firm diversified, including setting up the roof truss manufacturing facility.

The firm recently won a supplier of the year award from housebuilder Redrow.

MTS has been involved in a number of projects across South Wales including suppling constructional timber to the new Admiral building in Newport city centre and St David’s 2 in Cardiff.

Mr Worthy said the company, which currently employs 38 staff, would be taking on more staff as demand increased.
