The logo for the Newport Nato summit, being held at the Celtic Manor Resort in September, was unveiled last week. It carries no mention of the city of Newport apart from a stylised representation of the city's Transporter Bridge.
Business Argus has asked local business people what they thought of the logo...

Having designed the place brand for Cardiff while working for Golley Slater, I know how contentious these projects can become. For example, how can you represent something as colourful and diverse as a city in something the size of a postage stamp? When you add in the complexities of bilingualism, it makes for a challenging project on which everyone with a vested interest will no doubt have an opinion. I would, however, question the need to translate NATO as it’s a global acronym which is universally understood. I'd also like to clarify if this is the Newport or Wales Summit as I think some confusion exists.

It reminds me of a horse designed by a committee (a camel). Something like 'NATO Summit 2014…Newport – Centre of the Universe' would have been more appropriate. Seriously, it’s a real hotchpotch. It did, however, achieve the goal of the designers - no mention of Newport at all. Not even a mention of Vale of Usk or Celtic Manor, Cardiff - one of their usual tricks. They should have held it (the Nato Conference) on a remote Scottish Island and not told anyone until it was all over.

The logo means nothing to me. I am more concerned about the lack of co-ordination at Newport City Council. I fail to see how the event will bring in revenue to the city coffers, but I can see the effect it will have on local business. They are only now waking up to the security implications with schools being closed for extra days. This event has been scheduled for a long time and coming at the end of the summer holiday, surely they could have tied it in earlier so that the holiday finishes afterwards? The inevitable traffic disruption will have an effect on business in the immediate area and I assume that we will be expected to pay the bill. It will also have a serious effect on our charity bike ride to Anglesey scheduled for that weekend. Our route goes up Catsash and it will probably be closed to dangerous bike riding engineers like us. This will mean an extra 10 miles on the first day of three which could be the final nail in one or two coffins. I don’t suppose Obama and co have even given this a thought. How selfish can you get? Do you think we could apply for a special dispensation? Has the no-go zone been published yet? Will it stretch all the way to my house on Christchurch Road? Should I get in extra supplies in case of a lock down? Will I be able to re-enter the area on Sunday evening? Getting back to your question, frankly, I am surprised that Newport is represented on the logo at all.

It's like the Ryder Cup all over again with a huge opportunity to raise Newport's profile globally which it looks like we will miss out on again.
