Specialist steel bridge manufacturer Mabey Bridge is celebrating after three major projects featuring steelwork produced at the company’s Chepstow facility triumphed at the annual Institution of Civil Engineers Awards.

The Loughor Viaduct replacement programme, a rail viaduct scheme near Swansea for Network Rail, won the George Gibby Award at the ICE Wales Cymru Awards for the best outstanding design and construction of a project over £3m. This project saw Mabey Bridge working closely with partners Tony Gee & Partners and Carillion Rail to design, manufacture and install a new structure to replace the original wooden viaduct build by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

At the ICE London Civil Engineering Awards, the iconic Walton Bridge in Surrey, which cost £32.4m and features more than 1,000 tonnes of steelwork, received the special Community Award. At the same time at the ICE SE England Civil Engineering Awards, the innovative Adur Ferry Bridge in Shoreham-by-Sea won the Community Benefit Award.

Chris Droogan, CEO at Mabey Bridge, said: “Each of these projects presented specific challenges and each illustrates the capabilities of Mabey Bridge to deliver solutions,” explained . “The Loughor Viaduct replacement was a major engineering project that needed to consider a wide range of environmental factors and installation complexities, while the Walton Bridge has been recognised by ICE as a project that is a great example of engineering giving real value to the community and delivered with full community engagement. The Adur Ferry Bridge is truly innovative and an outstanding example of design. For Mabey Bridge there is a great satisfaction in delivering such important landmark structures, and it is a great honour for all of our team at Chepstow to have these bridges recognised by our peers at ICE.”

Commenting on the Walton Bridge, the ICE judging panel said: “The bridge is a vast improvement on its predecessor and forms a key part of London’s strategic road network over the Thames which was validated by this winters devastating flooding. This achievement is even more impressive considering it was delivered on time and budget, and with an exemplary safety record and zero waste to landfill during construction.”

The Walton Bridge will look familiar to Newport residents as it closely resembles the City Bridge on the Southern Distributor Road which opened in 2005, for which Mabey Bridge also produced the steelwork and which on completion was also an award winner at the Structural Steel Design Awards.
