Exciting news… a whole new use for your garage!

You know where I mean. That useful, largish shed where you keep all the rubbish you moved from your last house. Things like old unused furniture, pots full of soil but no plants. You may even have converted it into a tool shed with workbench and all the good gear that any self-respecting DIY amateur needs.

But guess what? I have come up with a new use for your garage. Please don’t tell anybody because this is a secret between you and me.

You could use the garage - I hardly dare mention it - as a place for keeping the car. Yes, I know it’s revolutionary. But, I’ve been doing it for some time now and nobody has complained.

You’ll be glad you’ve started to use your garage for the purpose it was intended to be used, when biofuel and electric cars become cheaper and more popular, as they will - mark my words. Then, not only will you be able to park your car where it should have been all along, but you’ll be able to plug it in and charge it up overnight.

A similar revolution has just occurred in the world of retirement planning.

On March 17, Chancellor George Osborne got up in the House of Commons and said: "No-one should have to buy an annuity.”

He went on: "You’ve earned the money, you’ve saved the money, it should be up to you how and when you spend it.”

Now, there’s a thing. Fancy a politician telling us that our money is really ours, when for the past 50 years (at least) they’ve behaved as if it was theirs.

From next April, provided you’ve reached the age of 55, you can access as much of your private pension as you like. No ifs, no buts. There are some rules, this is the real world, after all, but basically it’s yours.

Final Salary pension Schemes will not be accessible in the same way. There will be new rules that affect them. And why would that be, you ask? Because many of them in the public sector are unfunded. To quote Aneurin Bevan - 'the funny thing about the National Insurance Fund is there ain’t no fund'.

Have a good Summer.
