Steve Matthews is commercial director of Centric Recruitment, which has bases in Newport and Pontypool.
1. How did you get into your current job?
I fell into recruitment some 12 years ago to be honest. After graduating from Swansea University, an opportunity came up with a locally-based company and it has gone from there. I've never looked back!
2. What’s the best bit?
The people. We have a great team of people at Centric Recruitment who are extremely good at what they do and who are a great bunch of people to work with.
3. What was your first Saturday job?
Working through a recruitment agency funnily enough as a picker and packer at a local warehouse.
4. Describe your ideal job?
It has to be a full time wine taster – sounds a bit alcoholic that!
5. What motivates you?
Family, friends and money. Creating the best life that you can for your kids has to be at the top of the list.
6. And what irritates you?
People that think the world owes them a living. The harder you work, the luckier you become as the saying goes!
7. Who do you most admire in business and why?
Any entrepreneur that makes their own fortune. They have clearly taken risks and put the hard work in to build their empire. Hats off to them.
8. What was the last book you read and what did you think?
It was Roy Keane’s autobiography while on holiday. What a complex character he is but very driven and straight - even when people don’t like what he has got to say.
9. What do you do to relax?
Spend as much time with the kids as possible as they are growing up so quickly. Also, playing golf although not very well to be honest.
10. What dreams are you still to fulfil?
From a business point of view, to see Centric become the number one agency in Wales and from a personal point of view, to kick off a property portfolio.
11. What was the last film you saw at the cinema and what did you think?
I am not really a cinema person but it was Cinderella. The joys of having young kids.
12. Favourite food and place to eat it?
Chinese food and I haven’t found better anywhere better than Singapore while on honeymoon. What an incredible place.
13. What car do you drive?
A BMW 3 Series but I am sure that the Aston Martin will come eventually.
14. What’s in your car’s CD player at the moment?
Unfortunately the Frozen soundtrack – I know every word. If I actually had a choice, it would be Ed Sheeran or Snow Patrol.
15. What’s your favourite TV programme past or present?
It’s got to be Only Fools and Horses. An absolute classic that still gets a laugh every time you watch it.
16. Do you tweet? If so, how can we follow you? If not, why?
I am on Twitter but I don’t tweet very often through my own account to be perfectly honest but we do Tweet a lot through the company (@smatthews1) and (@CentricR).
17. If you were an animal, what would you be?
A lion – king of the jungle.
18. Proudest moment?
The birth of my two daughters without question.
19. And most embarrassing?
There are too many to mention – I am sure my friends would give you a long list though.
20. What advice would you give to someone wanting to be successful in your line of work?
You get out what you put in. Recruitment is an industry where you meet lots of different types of people and if you put the hard work in, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable career and industry to be involved in.
