When popular Newport venue Le Pub moved to new premises in High Street, Newport City Council was pleased to be able to give the community project a helping hand.
The city centre venture offers a pub and café, serving vegan food, showcases talented local musicians and hosts art-based activities.
For the last two years, the council has offered grants to new enterprises and established businesses wishing to expand and Le Pub is one of those to receive such assistance.
General manager of Le Pub Samantha Dabb said: “We have adopted a new vision as a community interest company and offer a fantastic social space.
“It was quite expensive and difficult to get off the ground so the council’s grant towards the first year’s rent was very welcome.”
A community interest company is a business whose primary objective is social rather than profit or shareholder driven and surpluses are mainly reinvested in the business or in the community.
Cllr Jane Mudd, cabinet member for regeneration and housing, said: “This is such a great idea and venue and I’m really pleased the council has been able to assist in a small but important way.
“Le Pub is a brilliant initiative that adds to the vibrancy of the city centre. We are lucky to have some excellent independent businesses that enhance the offer to residents and visitors.
“We are now looking at continuing the successful grants schemes next year. In the meantime, I would urge new and existing businesses who are looking for advice and support to contact our expert business services team.”
