A gaming business in Pontypool has gone from strength to strength after first opening its doors in March.
Based in George Street, Pontypool, Duke's Gaming was opened in March by Luke Durham, a gaming enthusiast of more than 20 years and experienced retail manager with well-known brands such as Game and Mamas and Papas.
Open during Monday, Thursday and Friday evenings from 5pm – 9pm and all-day Saturday, Duke’s Gaming has been attracting gamers from as far away as Bristol, Brecon and mid Wales. Luke typically welcomes up to 16 customers during a session.
Luke said: “There are a number of gaming clubs and societies within Wales and the South West, plus there is, of course, a lot of online competition.
"However, there are few opportunities for gamers to enjoy the hobby of table-top gaming outside of their own homes or clubs.
"I have always loved the table-top scene and really so pleased that Duke's Gaming is able to offer a safe space to play and socialise comfortably and to appreciate other games too. I keep costs as reasonable as I can, for example it’s just £3.50 for all day Saturday table hire per person.
“I undertook a great deal of research before I opened. Pontypool has proved to be a great, central, accessible location for my business whilst the premises are also very reasonable in terms of costs.”
The business also offers room hire for game parties and tournaments, and offers tutorials as well as a bespoke service for miniature figure painting. There are no age restrictions and throughout the school summer holidays Luke will be offering child friendly training days.
Gaynor Wakeling, business support manager at Torfaen Economy & Enterprise, said: “Working with and providing advice to Luke during the early stages of him setting up his gaming business was a real pleasure. His enthusiasm and knowledge of the industry were exemplary and I am delighted that the business is already attracting clients from right across the region.”
Councillor Richard Clark, deputy leader and executive member for economy, skills and regeneration at Torfaen Council, said: “Duke’s Gaming is an example of how a small business can develop in Torfaen and due to the borough’s accessibility, also attract a client base from across a wide area.”
