Newport's Celtic Manor Resort, home to the 2010 Ryder Cup, has been voted 2007 Welsh golf course of the year by readers of Golf Punk magazine.

Just five months after opening its new Twenty Ten course, Celtic Manor picked up the top honour in awards which also recognised golf venues including Augusta, Valderrama, St Andrews and Wentworth.

World number one Tiger Woods, Open champion Padraig Harrington and retiring legend Seve Ballesteros also won gongs in The Staunch Awards 2007.

The award caps a successful year for The Celtic Manor Resort which was voted Best Hotel in Wales in the inaugural Hotel Club Awards, and a finalist in the Best UK Hotel of the Year Awards in the Meetings and Incentive Travel Awards.

The Twenty Ten course opened for limited play in July but its spectacular risk-and-reward challenges - designed and built specifically to produce dramatic team match play in The Ryder Cup - has already drawn international attention.

Prestigious membership to The Twenty Ten Club at Celtic Manor was launched last month to coincide with the opening of the new Twenty Ten Clubhouse - a second large and luxurious golf clubhouse at the Resort.

Celtic Manor Resort chief executive Dylan Matthews said, "We've had an amazing response since opening The Twenty Ten course in July.

"For Celtic Manor to be voted Welsh golf course of the year for 2007 puts the icing on the cake of what has been a very exciting 12 months for the resort. We've opened another new course - The Montgomerie - and a fantastic new clubhouse to complete a unique golf offering for our members and visitors.

"We're looking forward to another busy and successful year in 2008 when The Celtic Manor Wales Open moves to the new course for the first time."
