Most workers were not aware of their employment rights, putting them at risk of unfair treatment, according to a new report today.
A survey of 4,000 adults by Which? Legal Service revealed that six per cent were made redundant in the past two years while one in 10 had their pay frozen.
Seven out of 10 did not know how much redundancy pay they were entitled to, while half mistakenly believed they would always have the right to a redundancy payment.
Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith said: "Our research shows that most people would have absolutely no idea what their rights were if faced with redundancy or a pay cut. Ignorance is anything but bliss in these situations - it really does pay to know where you stand."
