If you had to be stuck in a lift with someone, who would it be and why?

Brendan Rodgers. I’m a big fan and think he is a very shrewd manager, but I would like to know why he bought Mario Balotelli for Liverpool.

What is your biggest fear?

The continuing degeneration of relations between the West and the Muslim world turning into an all-out confrontation.

Do you have any superstitions?

No, I don’t subscribe to superstitions. They hold you back from doing what you need to do to influence events yourself.

If you could listen to only one song for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

This Land is your Land – Woody Guthrie. I’m an American citizen and it represents the positive side of the history of the US.

What is the most expensive thing you’ve bought, not including property?

My wife and I bought a big framed photo of Muhammad Ali with the Beatles, which was autographed by Ali himself. It’s an iconic photo and is worth a few thousand.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

My father always told me to do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

What is your indulgence?

Travel. I love going to new places and have been trying to get away more and more of late.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I’m a bit of a worrier. As I get older, I would like to try and relax more.

Where are you next going on holiday?

We’re going to Brussels in April for my wife’s birthday.
