ON A recent shopping spree in Newport city centre, many fellow shoppers and I agreed with the comments of Elaine Price (Argus 25.10.12) that the new seats in Commercial Street are ugly and uncomfortable and often rain sodden!
Can we expect similar customer unfriendly facilities in the imminent new Iceland Store (‘The best is yet to come’!?) and Newport City Council’s improvements to the indoor market? Where practical, Newport’s shops need wider aisles for wheelchair access, shallow freezers and counters, and good seating, especially for senior citizens, and easy-to-read labels and easy-to-open packaging. If two escalators replaced two of the cumbersome stairways in the indoor market, surely this added attraction would bring more happy shoppers and tourists. Other towns and cities think of their potential and existing customers, so why doesn’t Newport?
