WITH regards to the police commissioners elections this month, I say don’t bother. This will be yet another quango which over the years will be expanded to cost us money.

Schools are closing and we have already wasted money on ballot paper costs. As for the candidates, we have two ex-policemen and a solicitor. Why is it that policemen retire early with nice pensions while the rest of us have to slog it out until 60 or 65? Not happy going to the allotments, they have to become control freaks and get us to pay for it. As for solicitors, well we can group them along with insurance companies and bankers who just want to bleed us dry. The only people who will bother to turn out for this election are their friends and wannabe middle class intellectuals while the rest of us will pay the cost. Putting an ex-policeman in charge of the police is like asking Josef Stalin to be a watchdog against the proliferation of Communism. I am sure that all candidates are decent people who have worked hard, but it’s time to get off the gravy train.
