PEOPLE of Newport, do you know what is happening to our treasure? The National Trust has swept in, with considerable financial help from the council (many millions), and seems determined to turn Tredegar House and Gardens into a theme park.
Our lovely museum, filled with many objects, researched and purchased by the Friends of Tredegar House, has been transformed into an almost blank canvas in order that visitors may enjoy a hands-on experience. Important items relating to family life have been removed, some even being considered for display around other venues in Wales. There has been no consultation with the Friends over this policy. Indeed, the Friends themselves have been tossed aside as they have no role to play in the Trust’s remit. It would seem that consultation in any form is not in the Trust’s plans. Granted that they play an important role in conserving our heritage, but a lighter touch would have endeared them more to the people of Newport. Act now if you prefer a beautiful, realistic house reflecting our history to a watered-down theme park.
